Claiming to be Wise

I think it’s only natural that we like to show off or just act like everything is cool when it’s not. I know I’ve done some pretty idiotic things trying to show off and it hasn’t worked out. But don’t we sometimes do that in bigger things than let’s say a simple jump or trick, a temporary thing that lasts for a few weeks at most . What about a big test, ever said “Hey, I don’t need to study” got the test back and you got all of a 37.7 % or a 58 or something less than you desired. Have you said “I’ll never get addicted” when you first tried something? There are countless instances you can probably recall. But what about the biggest things? What about life what if you were to die and get neon sign flashing at you saying “YOU DID LIFE WRONG” and there was nothing you could do to change it, what would you do?

Ever felt this way?

So they are without excuse. For although they knew God they did not honour him as God or give thanks to him

But they became futile in their thinking and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Claiming to be wise they became fools

and exchanged the glory of an immortal God for images

resembling mortal man, birds, and animals, and creeping things.

because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie

and worshiped and served the creature rather than the creator.

-Romans 1:20-23, 25

It seems almost to simple, doesn’t it? But the hard truth is that it is so hard to live by that.  As Christian I bet we can think of a time we have elevated something tangible and fatalistic above the immortal and all powerful God. Which just seems silly? But not at the time. If you are not, then it goes to show that you do put other things above God even if you don’t believe he exists.

We have all seen the work of God look at yourself, look at nature, look at the complexities of your eye, look around you and you see it. So Paul, the writer of Romans, tells us we are without excuse if we let anything elevate above God. He doesn’t specify it has to be bad, he just specifies it is mortal and created which includes all categories but God.

Because let’s face it if you were to die and see that neon sign “YOU DID LIFE WRONG!” or you let your priorities run your life everywhere but God and the only thing that is everlasting never ending, and forever is God and you messed that up and there is no going back, you did in fact claim to be wise and in that process become a fool in the worse possible instance.

Think on it, whether you proclaim yourself a Christian or not. Whether you think you are okay or not.

Life and death and eternity is definitely worth thinking about
